Why choose USA AMA for martial arts training?
We know there are many options for martial arts training in the Ascension Parish and surrounding areas, each school/program offering something a little different. Especially if you and your family are new to martial arts, it can seem overwhelming choosing the right place to train. We are proud to say that we are the longest running martial arts school in Ascension Parish, training students since 1986! We offer classes for both children and adults and in several styles, providing you and your family with well-rounded martial arts training.
What is a typical class like?
Most classes last about 45 minutes and while there will be some flexibility and deviation, most classes follow the same basic structure. Class usually starts with light stretching and a warm up. Then, each month we create a calendar which list the topic/focus area for that day and material covered in class will generally follow this schedule. Some classes will then end with a fun drill and/or a mat chat.
What is “sparring”? Is it safe for my child?
There are numerous benefits that come with martial arts training, but most important is learning self-defense, should an unfortunate situation ever arise. Sparring is important in that it gives students an opportunity to test and refine their skills in a safe and structured environment. Training students in Ascension Parish and surrounding areas since 1986, the USA Academy of Martial Arts is one of the few schools in our area who still spar. Some students love it and some loath it (and, as a parent, it isn’t always easy to watch) but we firmly believe that it’s an invaluable part of training and helps build confidence. But don’t worry, we don’t throw kids into the ring on the first day of class! Students will begin sparring around the level of 4th degree yellow belt and, when they do, they will have the necessary gear to keep them protected as they learn.
How long does it take to get a black belt at USA AMA?
While based on many factors and only an estimate, it takes about 3-4 year to earn your black belt in Tang Soo Do at USA AMA. Testing for rank/belt promotion is generally held monthly for eligible students and the time between rank testing is only an estimate. We seek to develop well-rounded students and so promotion from one level/belt to the next is NOT guaranteed as many factors are taken into consideration prior to advancing a student (how well a student has learned and can execute the material taught, how the student is performing at home and at school, etc.). Once a student reaches the rank of red belt, their training becomes even more focused as they prepare for their black belt test. At USA AMA, our rank promotions are EARNED! Our black belt tests are rigorous: a 24-hour test of not only skill but endurance, perseverance, and bonding with their fellow students, black belts and instructors. THIS is what separates our school from the rest!
Is USA AMA a competition school?
While we don’t consider USA AMA to be a competition school overall (meaning, we don’t push all of our students to compete in tournaments), we do have a competition team for students and families who wish to attend local tournaments. This competition team meets periodically on weekends to practice and prepare for upcoming tournaments. It acts as a support system for those who wish to compete. However, this is completely optional.
